• Great to be able to see specimens and ask questions about the development of the buds

• I loved hearing what other teachers are doing--I can't wait to re work some curriculum for next year.

• Graphing literacy is becoming more and more important on the MCAS, good to have this information

• Joe's work was something I might be able to scale down for middle school and Mary's was something I might try to scale up.

Spring Workshop For Teachers

New This Year:  

• Student Work/"Poster Session". All Workshop participants are encouraged to bring samples of student work to share in a designated space at HF where we all can view samples from multiple schoolyard sites and interact with Educators about how students at their locations are engaging in project related activities/educational content. 

Back By Popular Demand:

• Teacher Awards for 5 and 10 year Project Leadership. Teachers will be awarded for long term dedicated participation in HF Schoolyard Ecology.

• Lightning Round.  Educators from each site will share 1 slide in 1 minute as part of this fast paced look at what is happening regionally in the frame of HF Schoolyard Ecology. 

• Ecologist-led Breakout Sessions. Get the dirt on seasonal and current changes related to your project Inside and Outside.

• Teacher presentations.  Two teachers will go deeper into how they are integrating project themes into work with students at their sites and classrooms.

What's New for Spring 2018 Harvard Forest Schoolyard Workshop for Teachers?

Firsts This Year:  

• Be the Student. Two of our afternoon presentations will allow active participation as we all get a chance to be the student trying out newly developed learning activities.

• Introducing our "DATA Nugget". LTER Graduate Student (Dartmouth College and HF) will share a new way of getting students to work with real data.  New connection to Harvard's signature "Eddy Flux Tower" study which has led the way for forest to atmosphere carbon exchange research internationally.  

• High School Student led presentation.  Stoneleigh-Burnham student, shares the results of an independent project related to the Hemlock Woolly Bully study.  

• Local Land Use Change Activities. Three teachers share new activities engaging students in using Land Cover Change maps of their schoolyards and towns to learn about land use change over time.

Summary Description:

THE HARVARD FOREST offers a Schoolyard Ecology training workshop for teachers of grades 4-12 and environmental educators who have attended a summer institute and have collected fall data for the Forest Ecology Schoolyard studies.  Professional Forest Ecologists will prepare teachers to implement the spring field study protocols.  All teachers will participate in field walks with project ecologists.  Five experienced Schoolyard teachers will present related curriculum materials and student samples created throughout the school-year.

Goals:

• To provide further background knowledge of project related themes and processes, in order to enable educators to implement the spring project protocols with students.

• To encourage teacher networking and sharing of curriculum related to Schoolyard Ecology projects. 

Outcomes:

• Teachers will be prepared to lead students in implementing spring field protocols. 

• Teachers will be provided with peer developed curriculum insight, information, materials and/or student samples to aid in teaching project related themes.
